A New Project

So besides working on the new website helpbuntu.mstrutt.co.uk/testing/ I have decided to begin work on a new project.

The plan is to take two old computers, both of which having vairous critical problems with them, gut them and build one computer which is far superior to both. When I say old, I really do mean it. Here is the spec for the two computers.

Peak
RAM: 64MB
CPU: Pentium-MMX, 233MHz
HDD: none

Dell OptiPlex GX1
CPU: Pentium II, 500Mhz
HDD: 4.2GB
RAM: 128MB

While the Dell seems like the obvious choice to use, and is by far the easiest to work with and build on, it has one serious fault. The system clock runs fast. Now when I say this I don't just mean I have to adjust it weekly, I'm talking more 2mins coumpter time for every 1sec of real time. I currently have an old version of Ubuntu installed on this machine, and the clock works at real time when booted, however when switched off for a few months while I was away, it decided to max out the date and reset the system, claiming that the OS was installed in the future. So while the 'Y2K Bug' didn't exist, it seemed it happened at the year 10,000.

So I'll see where this get's me, and hopefully will update with progress soon. I haven't entirely decided the purpose of this system yet, one thought was a dedicated ftp server with my 1TB harddrive wired in, another was simply to see how fast I could get it to run as a desktop using Puppy Linux, maybe even dual boot between the two.

That's all for now, logging off.

My First Post

Hello and welcome to the HelpBuntu blog (for helpbuntu.mstrutt.co.uk).

Here I will be posting my musings about Ubuntu, computing, and the internet. Hopefully they will be of interest.

For now at least I feel this will be the best place to put the Blog using an easy and familiar system before one day building my own for, especially as the site is currently under re-development. To some degree at least I suppose this will be a development blog, but I want it to be so much more than that in the long run.

Well I guess this concludes the singature "My First Post", look forward to speaking to you all soon.
